Do It. Do It Now!

risk, risk-taking, courage, tightrope, balanceRisk. The Merriam Webster website defines risk as “the possibility that something bad or unpleasant (such as an injury or a loss) will happen.”

We spend most of our lives trying to avoid the bad and the unpleasant. We eat right, exercise, drive carefully, take out insurance, do research on trips we’re planning, make certain our loved ones are safe and protected.

We do all that we’re capable of to avoid risk and yet without taking that chance that “something bad or unpleasant” will happen we’ll never grow, we’ll never go forward, we’ll never be more than what we are.

We all take risks, whether consciously or unconsciously. If we’re out and about in the world, if we’re going to work, eating dinner, taking a shower, driving to visit to family, breathing, living, we’re taking risks.

Risk is not only our business. It’s our legacy. Our ancestors took risks when they decided to leave the safety of the village and go over that mountain to see what was on the other side.

I’ve taken risks. A lot of them. I’m taking a risk right now self-publishing my books instead of going the traditional route. I took a big risk when I decided to jump off my career track to Nowhereville and concentrate on my writing. I’m still taking a risk because I have no idea if any of this is going to work out. Some might even say I’m a bit too “seasoned” to be taking any risks. That I should be thinking more about playing it safe, splashing around in the shallow end then wading out to the deep end.

Bollocks, I say! Or baloney! For whichever side of the Atlantic you’re on.

Without risk, you’re not alive. You’re just some stagnant, floating piece of boring flotsam on the ocean we can existence.

“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far it is possible to go.” — T.S. Eliot

“It is only by risking our persons from one hour to another that we live at all.” — William James

“Leap and the net will appear.” — Zen Saying

and my favorite

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So risk, saling, risk-taking, courage, vikings, sailing ship, ship, throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” — Mark Twain

So, ask yourself, right now as you’re reading this, what risks are you taking? What risks do you want to take or wish you had?

Seriously, don’t you dare wait until you’re about to take your last breath only to say “I wish….”.

Don’t wish.

Don’t dream.

Don’t desire.

Do it,

Do it now!
