Today’s Walk – 9/10/13

WalkingToday’s walk almost didn’t happen. It was hot here yesterday. Heat index of over 100. Overnight lows in the 70’s. I don’t do well in the heat, so I was anticipating this morning being uncomfortable. It also didn’t help I woke up a bit late, which meant the sun was higher in the sky. Very tempting just not to walk. But I did.

Weren’t as many folks out walking dogs. They were smart, I bet, and did it earlier so only two dog sightings and they were in the distance. Did run across two SPIDERS! I capitalize the word spiders because these suckers were BIG!. Bulky brown bodies, long spindly legs. *shudder*. Bad enough seeing one, but I saw two of ’em! Were they a a male and female off to mate and breed more of their monstrous kind? Or scouts for an invading army of mutant spiders? I don’t know. I just kept stepping.

Speaking of spiders, there was one on the front window where my writing desk is. It had spun a pretty large web, and it was a big one too. I basically just tried to ignore it. That is until this sparrow divebombed onto it and ate it. Scared the crap out of me too when that bird slammed into my window to get at that spider.

Walked past a sunflower in someone’s garden that was nearly as tall as I was. I’m not that tall, but it was still pretty impressive.

Start Time: 8:06 a.m. (overslept)

Duration: 45 minutes

Weather: Sunny; close to 79 degrees; dewpoint 63 degrees with a humidity of 58%. (really, it felt sticker than that, but I was walking)

Dog Sighting: 2

Spider Sighting: 2 big ones *shudder*

  1. I hate spiders. This is the time of year when they just walk right out of the grass and onto the sidewalk right in front of you. I mostly see the daddy-long-legged type, which, yes, I know, aren’t technically spiders but scare the crap out of me just the same. As for skipping the walking, Diane, are you close to a mall? I mall walk at West Town quite often and I know people also mall walk over at West Gate.

  2. I’m pretty far from West Town but I do live near Hilldale and I believe you can mall walk there. When the weather gets yucky I’ll switch to mall walking.

Are the spiders migrating? Is it mating season? Really, daddy long legs aren’t technically spiders?

    To Google I must go.

Back from Goggling. You’re right. They’re arachnids but not spiders. Their head, thorax and abdomen are fused into one. Wow, I did not know that. No matter how old I get, I still learn something new. Not sure if these were daddy long legs or not. I didn’t want to get that close. πŸ™‚

  3. Oh man I hate spiders too! We saw some really freaky neon yellow/orange spiders all over a tree in TX the day we were moving out. Thank God we saw it then – and not when we moved in or we never would have stayed! I think they were some kind of orb spider. Great job on the walking!

    • It just seems to me that nature went out of it’s way to make spiders so creepy. Take a butterfly. Beautiful, ethereal, lovely. Now, take a spider. It looks evil. I know, I know, they’re not, but then why aren’t there any movies or stories about giant butterflies terrorizing the populace. πŸ™‚

  4. On the spiders I’m of the live and let live mind set…unless they are poisonous. Living in Vegas we have black widow and brown recluse spiders, they are never long for this world if I see them, LOL. Great job with the walking.

    • I usually am too, as long as they’re outside. I can’t have ’em in my house. They are one of my major fears. One must have crawled on me when I was kid or something. I’m traumatized. πŸ™‚
